There are really people who think that sparrington is about the Angst and Pain rather than the Snark and Kisstag?

*really*?

I compiled a short list of why Jack and Norrington are MFEO, which is less about MFEO than it is about what characteristics they share.

1) They're men of intelligence. Jack may be nuts and Norrington may be hidebound, but they're both smart.

2) They are men who know their own worth.

3) They are practical Romantics.

4) The snark. Oh, the snark. Specifically as it concerns Norrington, the humor is dry dry dry, but it's definitely there. It's all sarcasm and *tone*, and gleeful kisstagging appreciation. You know who Norrington reminds me of? Inigo. I mean, without the daddy killin'. But he's the type of guy that would be all, "okay. You rest up and *then* we'll duel."

5) They like of the sassy women.

That is all. I came up with a beginning for Sparrington vs The Vampires and maybe a beginning for the wanky amnesiac fic o' doom.

I'm sure there are more ways in which they are similar, but I had to do actual AP stuff then and that was just a shame.

&heart; at this post. The points are all so true, and about the only thing I can add is 'the ocean'. With Jack it's obvious, but compare how uncomfortable James looks in the Port Royal scenes compared to those on board the Dauntless. They're born sailors, these two.

They're also MFEO because they give each other something to do with their time.

I have a deep desire to write insanely silly and cute sparrington to counteract the TheirLoveIsSoDoomed general feeling. That's not to dump on any of the authors who write them that way, because their writing skills make me wibble with the intimidation, but to me the antagonism of the sparrington is of an eyerolling, there-is-no-way-this-man-could-infuriate-me-more way from both parties.

Now if only I had any ideaaaaaaaaaaas.

Ooooh. Yes. That's the thing, really. Will, for all that he's got the blood of a pirate, seems like he'd be perfectly happy on land. And there's that line in the first draft script where Jack is, "My map will get you through if you've got a steersman good enough." and Norrington says, "I'll be at the helm myself." And the *second* I read that, I was reminded of the scene at the end of the movie, where Jack is fondling the wheel of the Pearl in a suggestive way.

There was going to be something in that list about how neither one of them is properly defined without the other. Norrington without Jack is an officer without purpose, especially given that his role in the movie *is* one of Piratical Boogeyman. He's defined by pirates and his actions toward them as much as Jack is defined by his quest for the Pearl. And the thing about Jack is that without Norrington to embody law and order, Jack is mostly just a sailor with interesting hair. It wouldn't be any fun for Jack if there weren't someone chasing him, because then it wouldn't be piracy.

And, you know. Norrington seems beyond pleased that Jack got away.

*gently encourages you to write insanely silly and cute sparrington* I could bribe! I could. And, well. TheirLoveIsSoDoomed is *valid* to a point. That point being where Norrington says, "By remembering that I serve others, Mr Sparrow. Not just myself." After that, we've got bitchiness and snark and "Nothing I'd lament being rid of" and "I was rooting for you" and "I think we can give him a day's head start." Especially that first, because Jack Davenport delivers it in a way that sounds a lot like a girl whose pigtails have been dipped in ink.

Besides, the way Norrington walks off the scene in Port Royal after Jack's escape makes me think that he's contemplating just how complicated he can make Jack's life and how much fun that will be. And Jack will retaliate by making Norrington's life a living hell, like with hat stealing and wig stealing and stuff, until they have some reason to truce and then they'll just snipe at each other like adolescents in love.

boy, that was rambly.

*quietly hmphs about the validity of sparrington as a smush in response to copracat's comment below, seeing as how the pairing needs an easy name because there is a jack and a james and the parallel rps pairing is jack/johnny but it's the other fellow who's jack in that one and it's all way too confusing unless there is a fun word to use in conversation, as as you already pointed out the alternative is narrow which isn't as fun. Yeah.*

Ahem.

Silly and cute, says you?

"I suppose if I were to look at the spyglass, I would find the eyepiece painted similarly?"

"Now you're spoilin' the joke," Jack answered with a sunny smile, tapping his fingertips against the brig's iron grill in an uneven tattoo.

Norrington found he was grinding his teeth again. He really must try to break that habit, along with eliminating several other small irritations he could do without from his life. "I don't know how you managed to orchestrate it, but I assure you that it stops now or you hang from the yardarm."

Jack appeared to contemplate this threat seriously, then shrugged and leaned back against the wall of his cell which sided against the sea. The water seemed to draw the man like metal to a magnet.

"As you say, Commodore, it seems impossible that I would be responsible for whatever misfortune has befallen you, seeing as how you've had me shut up for two days. So I can't promise to cease a desist, can I? Can't stop what I haven't started."

"Indeed," said Norrington drily.

"Might I enquire as to the nature of the malady?" Jack's grin was in danger of becoming wider than his mouth, a physical impossibility which Norrington had no doubt the pirate was nonetheless capable of.

"My wig seems to have been dipped into an ink bottle. I assume no officer or sailor would be discontented with my leadership to the point where they would risk spending time in the same cell as the somewhat overripe-smelling Captain Jack Sparrow, which points the finger squarely at you yourself."

Jack opened his arms as wide as the irons would allow. "Could've been a mermaid. Elizabeth told me your men seem to be under the impression you spend time conversing with them."

Norrington's mouth twitched in its stern pout. "I heard a similar story from her myself."

"So you still talk to the lass, then?" Jack's smile grew more sincere, which was unexpected enough to make Norrington blink in surprise. "Give her my regards, eh? She needs all the allies she can get, trying to start a life with that William."

"I somewhat expect 'that William' to be the one in need of our sympathies."

Jack laughed at that. "You're right on that, I think."

Well, it's silly, anyway.

Yes! Glad someone else has noticed that! I figure that Norrington's life would be so dull and routine without someone like Jack to chase after. The bit of Norrington that's not all about duty and rules is so drawn to Jack.

That part of Norrington is the same part, I think, that loves/d Elizabeth.

I just think Norrington really loves sassiness. which is why Will/Norrington doesn't so much work. Or Gillette/Norrington, in my strange little world. Groves, however, is sassy enough to appeal...er. given his single line.

Norrington is an intelligent man - he wouldn't have got where he was in his career if he was ordinary. And he must get fed up with being surrounded by 'yes men' toadying to him, so Jack would be a real breath of fresh air.

And for the same reason he would never fall for a woman who was a doormat - he needs someone with a bit of spark to match him. So I think you're right about Elizabeth.

Hmmm. Sparrington. A questionable smush (why, yes, I am the smush police, thank you for asking) but pretty cool if it is pronounced SPAR-ington and not to rhyme with the sparr in sparrow. They spar! Ooh! Ooh! Boxing - naked chests, tight pants and sweat and sweatily clutching.

Ahem.

For some people, every story is about the Angst and Pain regardless of the nature of the fandom. You just gotta recognise them and pass on their stories.

*giggling* I am willing to pronounce it the boxing way. 'cause in my head, the other smush is "narrow" and that's just not right. which isn't so much a *smush*, per se, as it is...lame.

Well, I'm not saying that the Angst and Pain is bad. 'cause they're quite fun, in that Angsty and Pained way. It's just...there is room with Jack and Norrington for the kisstag and banter.

Gee, can we tell why my favorite type of fic is?

Everything should be about the snark and kisstag.

MFEO = Meant For Each Other :)

One never knows unless one asks.
