...so, I'm supposed to *stay* in my house?

http://www.knx1070.com/O-C--Fire/1115546

I live less than 5 miles from this.

Er.

eta: people who I have promised not to die: I renew my promise not to die horribly in a fire. er. even though there is apparently a massive fire five miles from where I live. or something. I live near the 241! I am a little bit freaked out! But the Orange County Fire Authority says not to evacuate! Even though there is a big sign outside my complex that says to listen to KNX newsradio for updates!

eta2: WTF! Residents of Orchard Hills and Portola Springs areas of Irvine are asked to stay at home with windows and doors closed. THAT IS A MILE FROM WHERE I LIVE! I SHOP AT THE ORCHARD HILLS SHOPPING CENTER!

eta3: http://www.ocfa.org/pages/ocfa.asp?filename=canyonfire.asp

eta4: WOO! SO CAL FREEWAYS FTW! Apparently the fire that was headed toward Irvine hit the 241 toll road and stopped. I think. According to this news report thing. I hope. My bag is packed just in case.

eta5: now there are voluntary evacuations. !!!

eta6: ...and I can see the fire from my house.

eta7: and now I have switched to the emergency band for Irvine.

eta8:

The orange glow is the fire. The clouds are smoke from the fire. My bag is packed and ready to go, man.

eta9: there's a mandatory evacuation notice for 2 miles away. So. Uh. Well. We'll see what's going on.

eta10: now they've rescinded the mandatory evacuation and we're back to voluntary evacuation for the area just across the street from my community. woo. Or no, according to the emergency band, the mandatory is still on for the community 2 miles away but the OCFA says not.

eta11: I aten't dead! Woo! Fire seems to be under control.

eta12: Aaaaaand they're back to mandatory evacuations. Not near my house or in my city, but still. I am at work and well away from it, but I'm watching the OCFA page so I can let my mom know what's the happenings if she needs to go.

eta13: HAHAHA. It got worse. Approx. 15000 acres burned, mandatory evacuations in Lake Forest, and wind conditions/temperature not really working in anyone's favor. Grar. Judging from the evacuation sites, it's moving away from my house (thank goodness), but now there are 2000 structures in immediate danger and the fire has grown at least half again as big since I got to work.

http://www.ocfa.org/pages/ocfa.asp?filename=canyonfiremap.asp <-- a map of the fire. If you look on the far left side of the map where all the little streets are? That's where I live. Anyway. This is emphatically not super. There's ash everywhere, it's gray and smells like smoke everywhere, and just. Ugh.

This is a good promise you are renewing. I heartily approve.

people who I have promised not to die: I renew my promise not to die horribly in a fire.

Thank you, darling.

*worries about you, but feels better with your promise!*

That's bizarre. Are they saying "You can't leave" or "If you aren't leaving, at least don't hang around outside breathing the smoke.. stay inside with the windows shut"

Five miles.. I'd be freaked too. Do whatever you have to, to be safe!

[identity profile] j-crew-guy.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Meep! Do what you need to to stay safe!

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have to promise a lot of people not to die in a fire. Or in a car accident. Or other things. I...apparently encounter death a lot.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
*snuggles* My bag is packed and all I need to do is throw my computer into it and I'm good.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna try! I don't want to die horribly in a fire! I am not that brave, man.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're saying not to leave. Which. I hope that's what they're saying. I don't know.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
My bag is packed and ready to go. So if I do need to evacuate, I'm ready.

Hey, last I heard the fires jumped the 241.

That was at least an hour ago.

Oy. I have the OCFA website for the fire up and I'm refreshing compulsively.

[identity profile] elke-tanzer.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Doublecheck that you have a local map and/or Thomas Guide if you're going to drive out of the area; roads'll be closed and detours are confusing in orange smoke. Also take with you dust masks if you've got 'em, or at least a bandana to dampen to tie over your nose and mouth... smoke is sucktastic.

*hugs*

I'm in Burbank and we've got gusty winds and crappy air quality, but nothing as like what you're dealing with.

*more hugs*

Jesus, make sure you have some alternate routes, because I'm watching the news and I swear, every few minutes there's a new fire somewhere.

Stay safe. That's... extra super freaky.

I just left my cell on your LJ email. I'm in LB and hate me some Santa Ana winds, so ...

At any rate, I'll keep a good thought tucked away. Let me know if I can help.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
*mwah* I appreciate it! We have family down in south Irvine near the evacuation center so we may end up going there.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty terrifying! I've never had to evacuate anywhere before.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
So far they're just evacuating us south, so I should be okay with getting out. Hopefully.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Driving home in the smoke was kind of freaksome. But we have maps and everything so we should be good.

[identity profile] 3jane.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Be okay, please.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
*snuggles* I had to reaffirm my No Dying In A Fire promise earlier and I try to always keep my promises.

[identity profile] oh-mumble.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking hell, darling. Another of my friends is right by you and she's still waiting to hear if she's being evacuated.

Also, 'stay at home'? WHAT.

plz be safe.

[identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Now I am trying to decide if it is okay to sleep or if I should just stay awake. My life, so hard.

[identity profile] oh-mumble.livejournal.com 2007-10-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Stay awake, sleep tomorrow? Or set your alarm for every couple of hours?

omg.
