...sheer brilliance? I mean, that's like asking why is Citizen Kane considered to be the best US film or why Kurosawa is so awesome (neither of which compare even a little to Mammoth, of course).
Between brilliant and subtle directing techniques like monster-vision and the masterful acting of people like Vincent Ventresca, Summer Glau, Sean Patrick Flanery, Julie Benz, and Dean Cain and the complete realistic special effects, I really don't see how they would not be considered great art.
