unexpectedly satisfying!
Dec. 22nd, 2007 01:21 amSo, everyone and their mom -- I think literally -- has been telling me, "Oh, Sheila, read Lois McMaster Bujold, you'll really like her 'cause of x, y, z, and the other nine million things what you like that you have rambled on about forever." And so, failing to find the first Vorkosigan book, I picked up Paladin of Souls, found it immensely dull, and then promptly never picked up another book by her. I mean, I tried other things, like, uh, not-the-first-book-in-the-Vorkosigan-series, found it dull, and then failed to pick it up again.
Then, in a fit of Oh God, I'm Bored and That Robin Hobb Book Made Me Want to Punch Someone in the Face and I've Already Read Both Vampire Assassins for the CIA books, I picked up The Sharing Knife: Beguilement, liked it immensely, picked up The Sharing Knife: Legacy, liked it a little less, and was still utterly consumed by boredom. So then, thinking maybe my bad experience with Paladin of Souls was because I'm a freak who HAS TO READ THE FIRST BOOK OMG, I picked up Curse of Chalion and I liked it! I mean, pretty much it had the stuff I liked. Like good people! kickass women! interesting musings on the nature of religion! queerness! politics! sacrifice! more sacrifice! the bizarre twistings of fate! honorable people doing the best they can to walk the edge between cool pragmatism and integrity!
And so I still have Paladin of Souls to read and Amy told me to read Nancy Farmer and it is all pretty much entirely with the yay. Plus MCR is maybe touring the US again (take a BREAK guys, geez, except you know, California is pretty awesome and KROQ thinks you all are pretty nifty. Maybe you can drag Muse back out here! Awesome, y/y/mfy?)
Oooh, ooh, also I picked up the new Lupe Fiasco album. I am very excited.
In conclusion: Gunn = awesome. Discuss. Where by "discuss," I mean, "feel free to leave odes to his awesomeness in comments. Or write fic. You know, whatever strikes your fancy."
