I can forgive Will because (and only because), it seems to me that part of his story-arc is his realization that so many of his own ideas about who he is (and isn't) are wrong. He does a lot of really stupid things on the way to figuring that out. He kills a lot of people (Jack, if my memory is correct kills only *one* person, and that's Barbossa), he betrays Jack, he leaves Jack behind, and he truly is obsessed with treasure. He is turning into the very thing that he says that he hates.
By the end of the movie, Will is not the 'cool' Will of fanon. He has the potential to become that person.
