haterade: revenge of academia

1) I am still on Teams Yay Clarissa! and Yay Septimus! and eye-rollingly annoyed by the OMG BOHEMIA YAY-ness of Team Yay Peter (and I say this as a person who *genuinely* finds Rent to be a moving and emotional experience which I have seen too many times to count, but then, the OMG BOHEMIA YAY part is not the part of Rent I love best. The part of Rent I love best is Joanne, followed closely by Collins, Benny, Angel, and Mark when he's not being a pretentious fucker.) There are many reasons today's in-class discussion of Mrs. Dalloway was amusing, not the least of which is I got to bust out quantum theories of time as a support for Team Yay Septimus.

It seems that Septimuses and discussions of time go together very very well, hello Septimus Hodge, you arrogant dickweedy darling (heart! heart! heart!).

2) We spent, literally, five minutes covering the rest of the Modern period which included such insightful comments as, "Read Yeats, you all will like him. Oh, and Ezra Pound is good. This is a list of TS Eliot poems you should read but all we're going to talk about is the Love Song."

Which led me to the realization that of *all* the poems by Eliot that I have read and studied, The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock is the one I find both the least accessible and the least interesting. I love The Wasteland, the Four Quartets, and the Hollow Men. But Prufrock makes me want to poke out my own eyes with rusty forks. Go figure.

*thinks* Yeah, I got nothing else.

ETA: Also, I am taking my spanish final tonight! Go me!

ETA2: OMGWTF. If I'd known La Celestina were a play -- and a *romantic goddamn tragedy* on top of that -- I totally would have gone for the other one. I hate romantic tragedy plays! The only thing that makes R&J remotely palatable to me is the absolute awesomeness of Mercutio and Tybalt and their big gay gay gay hate love hate.

She forgot: Ezra Pound was clever and talented and also a psychotic nazi. But you know how these things slip your mind when you're teaching Modernist Lit.

I don't mind Prufrock, I must admit. It's the pretentious arse in me.
Wendy Cope did a version of The Wasteland in limerick form. I'll dig it out, it's hysterical.

*g* That is odd, because he was very very careful to explain that Carlyle was problematic because he probably would have supported Hitler. But no, there was definitely no mention of Ezra Pound other than, "Read it."

Ezra Pound was violently anti-semitic and crazy for Mussolini's pants political ideas. So, I'd say he was problematic, but at least it's clear why, you know?
