so, I'm maybe 200 pages into forest mage or whatever the fuck that book is called and I...quit. I don't usually just quit reading books, but everyone is just so unlikeable that I don't know what to do with it. I want to smack everyone and go, "Imperialism is wrong! Fuck off!" and "STFU Nevarre, you responsibility avoidant whining ass," and "STFU Nevarre's dad, you racist fuckwit!" and "STFU princess whatever your name is, you shallow immature douche."

This was largely my problem with the Assassin trilogy, except that I actually liked all of the characters except for the main whiny dude. I just...shouldn't spend the entire book wishing like hell that the main character would just shut up and die already.

I don't read fiction to be immersed in the reality of people being dicks; I read fiction to avoid it. Rargh. Maybe I can go find a nice romance novel to read. Or vampire assassins for the CIA.

I enjoyed the vampire assassins for the CIA book. I thought it was goingto be utter crap, but it wasn't. I've heard that there are at least two sequels in the works.

I'm reading Devil in the White City which is totally going to put my record for reading nonfiction in a year *right* over the top. I'm really enjoying it, even if the prose is rather purple at times. It's all like Suprise Theodore Roosevelt! Suprise Other Famous People! Holy shit, serial killers! <3

Sweeeet. I picked up my copy at BEA so I should probably put out some funds for the next few.

Yeah... I'm usually quite fond of Hobb's frustrating and unlikable characters, but damn did she go right past 'unlikable' and straight into 'produces equal parts boredom and digust' with that book. And apparently the sequel is even worse!

Oh dude, I totally read the first book in this trilogy 'cause I'm all, "Woo class divisions! Woo military school! Woo coming of age with magic and a plague!" and then by the end of it it was all, "OH GOD, WHY WON'T YOU JUST DIE." And then, thinking I had misremembered how awful it was, I picked up the sequel and just...wow. WOW. It must just take effort to write characters *that* unlikeable.

I mean, I'm not the biggest fan of disagreeable characters to begin with, but if they're disagreeable and also asskicking, I'm usually able to get past it. But man, no, these characters are all just icky.
