lol. Okay. I know fuck all about the general trend of fannishness because Smallville was my first Big Fandom and thus was right on the cusp of the Great LJ Move.
For me it was Due South-- I remember a bunch of DS-ers coming across at the same time-- Basingstoke, Aukestrel, Laura Kaye, Cara Chapel, Laura JV, etc.
I was actually reading a lot of my early 2001-2002 lj posts the other day, all nostalgic for my old SV snippets, and it was funny to see how many people were leaving comments without an account, and then finally caving and getting accounts as time went on. It was also funny to see how my corner of fandom-on-lj kinda EXPLODED when SV aired-- early in 2001, I could post 5 or 6 random lj posts in a row without getting any comments, but all of a sudden, a few eps into Smallville s1, tons more new people started appearing and posting and commenting.
Ok, if it's "the general trend of fannishness" then probably popslash or SV. But for me personally and for a bunch of people as far back as I can remember, DS.
Though seperis originally seemed to be saying that it was SV that was the first fandom on LJ, later on, in later pages of the comments, others said that popslash was actually on LJ earlier. So, I'm going with popslash, I guess? princessofg picks up the "SV was first to LJ" torch, but mentions that she hasn't read all the comments on seperis' entry, so I'm thinking that's why.
My first glimpse of an LJ was actually one belonging to unlovablehands, back during the days of Pitas, Diaryland, Envy.nu, teen-girl-tiny-text-websites, etc. *rummages in calendar* So, my first entry was April of '02, and I have no idea what fandom brought me there... I sort of wasn't in one? I apparently was watching SV at that point (I know I was reading Sarah T.'s old blog), and I didn't start reading popslash until '03 (after getting quasi-converted at a con), even though I know the fandom had been around since before I was on LJ; I remember reading Wax Jism's website/blog/thingy entries on it. At least, I think I'm thinking of Wax.
So, yeah, at some point, I made the leap from hanging mainly at websites and mailing lists to LJ, and there had to be enough of a presence on LJ so that I felt like doing what all the cool kids were doing, but I have no recollection of what prompted it. Also, apparently I was still reading on usenet at the time? The BTVS group. What the hell.
For me, the move was because of popslash. Cause popslash, at the time I got into it, was completely lj based. But I am a unique little snowflake, so who knows.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I got my LJ from minisinoo, who was still in X-men fandom at the time, and I used it for personal stuff and multifannish ramblings. There were BtVS/Ats people here, but there were also BtVS/Ats people still in mailing lists, so as a fandom I guess it was a fence-sitter.
Anyway, for me, LJ was always an escape from the single-topic fandoms, a multifannish venue with the personal mixed in. So my answer would be "all at once and so much more, yay!"
X-Men fandom migrated from usenet to lists to LJ, and most other fandoms seemed to do the same about the same time. I was on Usenet in 1993, lists by 1995 and was reading stories on LJ in 2002-3, I think, though I didn't join until 2005.
Smallville, a fandom born on LJ in 01. There'd been fans with journals and blogs but they were scattered. Fans coalesced on LJ like a spill of mercury.
There was a second wave of old school fans who came on board in the great old school goes rps wave of 02/03.
It wasn't one particular fandom for me. My biggest fandom at the time was Queer As Folk US, but that fandom didn't move to LJ en masse until around 2004. I moved because people I still kept in touch with from earlier fandoms (mostly BtVS, Roswell and Oz) had moved here and I was tired of following individual LJ links from first my Diaryland blog and then my Blogger blog.
Personally, it was HP fandom that made me get an LJ. There was still a huge chunk of that fandom on message boards/other not-LJ places, but the LJ contingent was pretty damn big. After that I wandered into Smallville fandom, and the rest is history. :)
I got on LJ because of a small webcomic fandom but I remember seeing the most fannish people I had been following in other venues take the LJ plunge on popslash.
I think multiple people from multiple fandoms (I was on BtVS/AtS, Smallville, and Multifandom lists at the time) migrated at similar times (this is my second LJ, created from an invite code that I got from my old, now deleted, personal LJ, which I had before I was involved in fandom, and I created this as a place to workshop stories, a practice I stopped in late 2002 when it became apparent that people were reading things as finished works, not as unbeta'ed things I'd stuck somewhere to noodle on) for various reasons, including technical difficulties with both lists and free web spaces (and various free BBS sites--post tech-crash, a lot of things went boom or play for pay). In terms of the timeframe, I'd say that Popslash and Smallville were some of the earliest fandoms to be largely LJ, but I don't think they caused the migration. Err. If that makes sense. Which it does to me.
I actually migrated here with a number of multi-fannish people who had taken up blogging and then discovered that we (a) liked the software better than first-gen blogger and (b) wanted to comment on other people's LJ posts.
This was definitely pre-SV, but, for me, my fandom at the time was probably Farscape or possibly TS, and I wasn't moving with either of those fandoms.
Even five years ago, I was already riding the fan of fandom train.
I joined LJ as a personal thing initially, because several RL friends had them. I was already vaguely aware of fanfic through LOTR, although I don't know if I knew what fandom was. I'm pretty sure the first time I was fully aware of fandom and actively participated lurked in it was actually Pirates of the Caribbean.
I got mine because of a webcomic actually, but I think the main fannish move was a combination of popslash and Smallville. Popslash started the move, and Smallville pretty much finished it.
I think in part it was the RL transition I was having from the end of college into The Real World, coupled with some Buffy and maybe even Star Wars, or Sports Night, or Once a Thief or Highlander or--
I has serious fandom ADD at the time.

ETA: I kinda wish I hadn't deleted my first lj to double check. Hmmm.
I can't exactly say I "moved" to LJ, because fandom as participation pretty much started on LJ for me, with Lord of the Rings, and stayed on LJ through all the new or rediscovered fandoms.
