so, hey, who wants to talk about Inda?
Jan. 23rd, 2010 01:34 pmI'm reading the first book and went, OH HEY THESE ARE BROWN PEOPLE (and Vikings!). And then I went, WITH SUPER AWESOME WOMEN. and then I went AND THERE IS A RANGE OF SEXUALITY. Oh, and lest I forget: HEY THERE HONORABLE STOICAL EVERYONE.
It's like the book was made just for me :D :D :D
I finished the first book and am now preparing to go buy the next three.
Well played so far, Sherwood Smith. Well played indeed.

Date: 2010-01-23 09:54 pm (UTC)And I'm sorry you did not like the vampire assassins in the CIA book. They make me giggle, largely because I think they know they're ridiculous and just sort of run with it and it feels very much like someone's cheesy Shadowrun campaign writ large, and I like that kind of thing.
For silliness that is a little less silly and a lot better written, you might want to look at Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity series. Elves, faery, cyborgs, high tech, assassins, interdimensional travel, etc.
And yes, Inda is an honest to goodness recommendation. With the caveats that I had trouble keeping the non-main characters straight for the first half of the book, and the villains are...well. Villains and awfully, tragically shortsighted. The good guys are capital G good guys, and honorable stoics to boot, every single one of them. It's not the most complex characterization in the world, but I enjoyed it immensely, and it made me remember why I love reading epic fantasy to begin with.

Date: 2010-01-23 10:20 pm (UTC)I've held off getting the other two- the last book wasn't out when I started, and it drives me nuts to have to wait. Yes- I realize I had to wait anyway. I didn't realize it was a series when I started!
I'm a little unsure how I'll feel about the ending- and I kinda think I'd prefer it be a trilogy. Note- not spoiled, just vague hints from amazon and folks not realizing there was a fourth book and then being kinda pissed with realizing the third didn't wrap it up.
Er- though I'll get around to the last two some time. What I particularly liked is how characters I didn't think I'd like- turned out wonderful. The secondary characters are really well developed.
And I must have found the book through my flist- it's where I get most of my reading recs. Wish I could remember who it was!
