How awesome is it that imaginary!Six and imaginary!Baltar are fucking up their real significant others for their real counterparts? Like, i!Six is screwing with r!Baltar's head in such a way as to render him as far from i!Baltar as possible and i!Baltar is, I think, who r!Six is in love with. And ditto for um, the reverse.

So fucked up!

ETA: And what's the word on B5 -- show for me or should I stay far, far away?

Give B5 a try. There are some plot holes here and there but the story hangs together very well over it's five year run.

*nod* I've heard nothing but good things about the plot; it's everything else I'm worried about because I have a very specific (and admittedly narrow) set of things that work for me as, say, fan crack and a very (very, very) large set of things that will put me off. Though, if I get my character id stroked, I will put up with a *hell* of a lot in terms of everything else.

I think, given that, you will really like a couple of the storylines, and would be best served to ignore a few others.

But it's definitely worth a shot.

*g* If I recall from like, the two eps of B5 I've seen, I really really liked Ivanova and her big lesbionic love and random british guy with the goatee and the magical expanding stick. But unless my Hollywood video has it, it is um. An investment and I'm unsure.

OTOH, I bought S:AAB totally on recs and the reputation of Morgan and Wong and I loved that despite the presence of Annoying Manpain #1 who, seriously, had manpain *more* annoying than Angel or Lee.

I have yet to run into anybody who doesn't really really like Ivanova. And most of the time, I ♥ the British guy.

I get the investment, though--I Netflixed the entire run, and am tempted to buy it, but. I haven't convinced myself yet. Maybe some kind soul would lend S1 to you? So you could decide. (If I had S1, I'd offer myself.)

manpain *more* annoying than Angel or Lee.

Seriously? Wow. Though maybe I'll have to check that show out, anyway.

I should probably just sign up for a Netflix account, especially if I end up vidding 88 Lines for 44 Women, but I don't watch dvds *that* often, so I dunno.

And don't get me wrong, I *love* S:AAB, it's just the one character who should die. Everyone else is competent, hot, and awesome.

I am a HUGE Babylon 5 fan. I think there are things you'll like: Ivanova, yes, and Marcus (bearded guy with magic stick). I think you may very much like G'Kar's arc, because I think he demonstrates why good doesn't have to be boring, and you might actually like Delenn.

Garibaldi will make you want to hit him with a stick, I think, and I say that even though I adore him with the big love. I think Londo will frustrate you, but you may end up liking him because he's very clear about why he does what he does.

This show was big in its mythology, and that's the real reason I loved it. I still remember the episode where I sat down and said, "oh my god, JMS really does have a plan for it all."

I'm totally willing to give it a go, but like I said, there's no one (store or person) nearby that has it, so it'd actually be a pretty hefty investment on my part based on nothing more than like, having seen the pilot and two or three other episodes and hoping like hell that there's something to hold my interest.

And truly, the whole JMS arcing the whole thing is what makes me interested in it. I like tightly plotted stories and that sounds really appealing after the headache that was VMars (and the last few eps of Grey's).

I liked B5, it's big, it's long, and the first series is not as good as the rest. Each series had one fifth more story arc than the previous one so it really builds up. Plus JMS *planned* like crazy for plot and characters, and, which I love, he also red herringed a bit too, so I was 'oh, now *that*'s going to be useful later ... ' and then it wasn't! (Which is a weird way to get my love but a good one!)

Even if you hate it I'd probably be interested in *why* you hate it, but, like I mentioned above, don't judge it on the first season alone.

Heh. That's actually very helpful. Though I am sort of leery of shows that take longer than a season to get me hooked.

And hey! At least my hate-itude is interesting to some people. Woo!

Well the first season is establishing the setup and the characters and the universe. And, I do have to say, the 'lead' actor is not *thrilling* to watch. He's not *bad*, but ...

Quite often I find people's hates much more interesting, and well written and entertaining, than their loves. You are one of those people!

Yes! B5 is of the good. I also recommend Crusade (but only after B5, as it takes place after most of the series, and the tv movies - A Call to Arms in particular)

When all was said and done, I loved it, but I agree with [livejournal.com profile] ngaio above. The first season and a half has a certain stink of "1980s genre TV" (think early ST:TNG) about it. You'll probably have to make yourself keep watching through some of it, until the point about halfway through the second season when everything slots into place and the show catches lightning in a bottle for the rest of its run.

Knowing you, I have my definite suspicions about who/what you'll like and who/what you'll hate. On balance, I think you'll like more than you don't. I'm writing down the rest of my predictions and putting them in a little envelope. We'll talk if/when you finish the show.

I *liked* early TNG. And I should probably explain that when B5 premiered, it was like, the same week as DS9 and I watched both pilots and came out of it liking DS9 and not so much B5. But you know, I was...younger then and slightly less developed in my tastes.

But see, I'm also kind of wary of shows that take longer than a few eps to get me hooked because it's never, ever worked for me that I will faithfully watch something that doesn't catch me in the first five. Though...I don't know. Grey's probably wouldn't have caught me early on, so maybe that should work as a lesson to me.

Ponder ponder.

I have nothing to say that other people don't. Big B5 fan, love the British guy, Ivanova is God, season 1 has about 2 1/2 good episodes but season 3 rocked. It may be possble to start with the second season and pretend for a while that the first season didn't happen.

As far as price? Netflix an option?

As to whether to, or not.. Go for it. B5 is one of the best told SF shows out there *dons asbestos jacket seeing the Buffy people comin' round the corner*.
