gacked from like, ten different people.

Ask Me My Fandom Opinion
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
2. Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

Well, I want to ask how you can read Jacqueline Carey without your head exploding *g*, but...how's this: What's your fondest memory of a fannish experience, whether it's a fic you read or wrote, or an IRC conversation, or a con, whatever?

I like Jacqueline Carey very much, actually. Like, I'm supposed to like the protagonists in the Kushiel trilogy and not only do I like them, but they're good people who are totally willing to sacrifice everything for what's right. *cough* Not that I'm all into that or anything. And I love what she did in The Sundering duology with the reversal of sympathy in LotR.

and hmmm. My fondest memory of a fannish experience...*g* hearing applause at Escapade after Jesus Walks. I am sometimes kind of an attention whore, man.

...well, okay, all of the time. I only admit it sometimes.

Gunn is more awesome than any one character has any business being :)

But seriously? He really is just an amazing character, especially for being one that got ignored largely by both the fanbase and the writers. Like, he went from being kind of this nihilistic and self-destructive hardass protector (SO MUCH with the death wish) to being a guy who was willing to compromise a lot of personal integrity to do the largest amount of good to being a guy who was willing to take his punishment because it was just to fighting and not dying nope nope nope not dying to fight the big bad one last time. And through it all he was funny and hot and smarter than anyone gave him credit for, innovative and clever and honorable and well-meaning, and he liked movies and thought Denzel Washington was robbed of an Oscar for Malcolm X and is awesome at Risk.

And and and he never ever lost sight of the mission or of what his role in that mission was. Never *once*. His cause was doing good and protecting people the best he could and he did it and never forgot that's what he was supposed to be doing.

And *that* is why Gunn is awesome.

If Giles and Wesley had a bitchfight, who would win?

Oh, that's hard!

Um. Um. Wesley. Because he would kick Giles in the balls and Giles has too much of a superiority complex about Wesley to think he would need to fight that dirty.

What do you think about Norrington not being in the navy anymore? Good thing, bad thing?

I think, depending on the way that it is handled, that it could be a very good thing. Because I like the idea of Norrington having all his power being taken away just to see who he is without it. I think it could be a very good story and, at the very least, at least he's going on some kind of character journey which is not something I can say for Jack, Will, or Elizabeth.

Also, I find it incredibly telling that even drummed out of the navy, he's still wearing his uniform coat. It *means* something to him and that is...pretty much all I need.

I have to agree. I love that he keeps the coat. I've been unclear oas to why he's kicked out though. Was it for letting Jack escape or for chasing him obessively?

How awesome is Jack Davenport? Is there a role he is most awesome in? Is there a role he is least awesome in?

Jack Davenport is so awesome I don't even have words to describe how awesome he is. He is smart and gorgeous and wry and funny and self-deprecating and a giant dork. So adorable!

And he is most awesome, I think, as Norrington. Because he's all pretty and he has that voice and that sort of steely determination to fight crime and yet he is also a little unsure of himself and he wants to be loved, but he wants to be loved honestly, and he's all *classy* and honorable and just. Yes.

...#2 on the awesome list is Malcolm from MacBeth Beyond the Thunderdome.

He is least awesome as...um. um. um. *draws a blank* Maybe Prince what's-his-face in Eroica? I have never seen Eroica so I don't know! Maybe he is awesome in that.

Please explain, in detail, which sci fi originals are the best ever, and why.

Well, clearly, #1 would have to be Mammoth. It has everything! A rampaging partially frozen alien possessed 30,000 year old herbivore who sucks the life out of people using its trunk, Summer Glau, Tom Skerrit, Vincent Ventresca being adorable and clueless, and a rave. Also cleverness in spades and also a wonderful sense of humor. Oh, oh, and dancing cave drawings.

#2...Cerberus. Because Hellpuppy is the awesomest most adorable murderous giant canine ever. Also there was the gay threesome.

#3 I have to go with Boa vs Python for this one, 'cause a) it has David Hewlett who is supposed to be like the uberhot in a greasy Phil Collins sort of way, b) there is a rave, c) there is bestial oral sex, d) there's snake sex, c) there are snakes. In my own personal canon of...cheesy SF-ness, I believe that the snake offspring of Boa and Python are the ones that hijack the plane in the upcoming masterpiece, Snakes on a Plane.

#4 is Raptor. Because GRAR! *makes guy-in-a-rubber-raptor-suit flaily motions* GRAAAAAAR!

#5 I give to Darklight. Because it has The Sentinel, David Hewlett, and That Chick from Roswell.

You are SO SMART. And make me want to rewatch Mammoth again. And SMART. (I don't know if I agree about the order of BvP, Raptor, and Darklight, but totally agree that is the top five.)

Why is our fandom so empty? EVERYONE should want to play!

P.S. TiVo has chosen to record BATS for me. "A bat-loving zoologist in Gallup, Texas, must find a way to stop genetically altered bats from killing people." It's on at nine. You gonna be around to watch, or should I watch it without you?
