So, you know. There's this guy, right? And his name is Butch Walker. And I like him.
A lot.
The way the rest of bandom seems to like Panic? That is how I like Butch Walker. Except with less gay porn. Also he's older.
Musically, Butch Walker runs the gamut from alt-country ("Rich People Die Unhappy") to power pop/rock ("Suburbia") to full on ubersincere (and gorgeous) ballads ("Cigarette Lighter Love Song," "Take Tomorrow"), to harder rock ("Lights Out"), to T-Rex inspired glam ("Hot Girls in Good Moods"). I may not have known that The Who and the Guess Who were different, but I do know that Butch Walker is *good* and has earned his entirely rabid and kind of crazy fan following.
Anyway! Butch Walker is a singer, songwriter, hot shot producer of power pop/rock, and an enormous dork. For the bandom people: he produced Santi for TAI as well as their cover of "Superman" on the Sounds of Superman compilation and also "Don't You Know Who I Think I Am" for FOB *and* he does backup vocals on "This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race," "Hum Hallelujah," "Bang the Doldrums," and "You're Crashing, But You're No Wave." And he was at the BMI panel with Patrick.
For non bandom people: Butch writes songs for and produces Pink, Avril Lavigne, American Hi Fi, Bowling for Soup, The Donnas, SR 71, Stroke 9, and a whole mess of others. He was named Rolling Stone's Producer of the Year in 2005. He used to be in a band called Marvelous 3 and *their* hit song (obv. written by Butch) was called "Freak of the Week." Now he tours solo, with various members of American Hi Fi, the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites (more about them later), and sometimes Avril Lavigne plays drums for him.
He's just totally awesome and I love him to pieces. So, thank you for Butch Walker, Patrick. If I loved you for nothing else, I'd love you for leading me to him.
I know, I know, this is a lot of text to read, but I REALLY LOVE HIM, Y'ALL. I have lots to say.
sendspace links all.
Justified and Stripped: Live and acoustic in Atlanta
Okay, I *seriously* love this concert. You can see it on the Butch Walker: Live at Budokan dvd in the bonus materials and it is well worth it.
"Diary of a San Fernando Sexx Star"
erase the message along with the life of everything you knew before
This is apparently a song about a girl from Rome, GA that Butch and his roommates saw in a porn film who then died of a drug overdose. This version is a hell of a lot more melancholy than the studio cut on Left of Self-Centered.
"Best Thing That You Never Had"
I can't like someone who thought they're the only one that mattered
It is, in Butch's words, a bitter break up song. Which...yes. It is certainly that.
"Cigarette Lighter Love Song"
My lips are raw as hell from biting on them just to stay awake
First, I love that the title of this song is "Cigarette Lighter Love Song." It is from his Marvelous 3 days and I have to say that I like the acoustic a lot more than I like the studio cut. Shut up, I really like pretty achey ballads.
"Suburbia"
So I put my Outkast record on, turn up the volume 'cause I'm all alone, and scream away
He does funny! No, really. It's just a fun song and I include this version 'cause it's fun, a, and b, he also sings bits of "Pimp Juice" and "Ms. Jackson," which pretty much just means that he's made of awesome.
Left of Self-Centered
His first solo album.

"My Way"
You got the ultimate song, but you're fucking up the words and you're falling from the bridge that goes straight into the verse
This is one of the songs that sounds closest to what he does for other bands, so it's very power pop/rock a la "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" and "Flavor of the Weak." It's fun as hell.
"Alicia Amnesia"
Every time that I call, she can't remember at all and that's the last I fall for Alicia
A little harder rock than he normally does. It makes me smile.
"Sober"
you go your way and I'll go mine. I'm sure that I'll be fine
Another breakup song. He writes a lot of them.
"Take Tomorrow (One Day At a Time)"
you scream at the screen "something move me!" before you start to fade away
He says is his completely unapologetic song of hope and that the critics can dog him for being cheesy but he doesn't care. And it is, but he's so completely sincere about it that I can't help but love it. Later in the post is a live performance of this song that makes my heart catch. Which SOUNDS CHEESY, I KNOW. And yet.
Letters
A little more introspective than Left of Self-Centered.
"Mixtape"
You drive away from my car crash of a heart
Oh, this song. Love song! Kind of stalkery (especially in the video, which is HILARIOUS)! Kind of pitiful. And yet an awesome song.
"So At Last"
sunsets like a long goodbye
I...really like this song. I do. It is a convertible with the top down driving on PCH just as the sun is setting song.
"Lights Out"
put me on the battlefield where hardcore goes to die
Oh god, this song is CATCHY AS HELL.
"Race Cars and Goth Rock"
they land at my feet right next to my pride
Heee. I also love this song a hell of a lot, largely because of the chorus.
The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites
Yes, it is a tribute to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. In more ways than just the title. He calls it his tribute to Bowie, T-Rex, Marc Bolan, and that whole set and he is *spot on* with a lot of the music, song structure, and the production stuff.
"Hot Girls In Good Moods"
sounds like heaven and feels good as hell
Everything about this song sounds like it's a collaboration between T-Rex and the New York Dolls. No, I'm not even kidding. You like glam? Have the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack? You will like this song.
"Ladies and Gentlemen...The Let's-Go-Out-Tonites"
I can't seem to, no matter how hard I try, outdance the dancefloor
So. Catchy.
"Dominoes"
I can hear a voice reminding me that I'm her hero
oh, *butch*. This is...piano and strings and melancholy and very Ben Folds.
"When Canyons Ruled the City"
beachwood was a boheme from the sexy 60s scene
Dude, it's a song anthropomorphizing the canyons of L.A. How is that NOT AWESOME?

Butch Walker and the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites. They're my vampire huntin' gang of choice.
Youtube links.
"Under Pressure" and "Bohemian Rhapsody"
He is so adorable I don't even have words.
"Take Tomorrow (One Day At a Time)"
HE MAKES THEM SIT DOWN AND HAVE A SINGALONG. BECAUSE HE IS AWESOME.
"Joan"
Oh, *Butch*.
"Cigarette Lighter Love Song"
the video that matches the audio I put up.
Rock Vocal Power/"My Way"
AHAHAHA. Seriously. So fucking cute.
Bethamphetamine (Pretty, Pretty)
The first single off Rise and Fall... It also stars Avril Lavigne! Looking remarkably like Kristen Bell.

Don't they look like they could kick some vampiric ass? *I* think they look like they could kick vampiric ass.
My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne
Co-wrote, produced, hit number 1 on the charts.
Flavor of the Weak - American Hi Fi
Wrote, produced (I think), made such good friends with the band that they play backup for him and the guitarist is on tour with Butch and the LGOTs while the regular guitarist for the LGOTs is/was helping out TAI.
Girl All the Bad Guys Want - Bowling for Soup
Wrote. Grammy nominated. I really like this song, guys. It makes me giggle and it's fun to sing.

Goddamn, he's pretty.
"Suburbia" (studio)
"Cigarette Lighter Love Song" (studio) - Marvelous 3
"Freak of the Week" - Marvelous 3

Butch *really really* likes wine.

Awwwww. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Or mack on your hot australian bandmate. I'm okay with that too. (omg I love that they're sort of in costume. LOVE.)

Butch likes Tegan and Sara. This means he is awesome.
A lot.
