So, [livejournal.com profile] thelionforreal and I were on the phone earlier and we were looking at Rolling Stone lists of the Top blah blah (guitarists, artists, videos) and some of them were awesome and some of them were like WTF and so you know. I came to them late, but I *love* music videos. Anyway. My top ten favorite music videos. I've included directors where I knew them and god knows, I'm way biased toward liking Spike Jonze as a video director, but some of them are I Just Like Them and some of them are like No, I Really Truly Think They Changed The Way People Look At Music Videos. Anyway yes. Forgive my clear "Wow, I totally grew up in the 90s" bias.

Thriller - Michael Jackson (dir. John Landis)
Seriously. Greatest music video of all time.

Sabotage - The Beastie Boys (dir. Spike Jonze)
Um. If there are people in this world who DON'T love this video, I do not want to know it.

California Love - Dr. Dre & Tupac (dir. Hype Williams)
It's Tupac and Dre Beyond the Thunderdome. How is that NOT AWESOME?

Buddy Holly - Weezer (dir. Spike Jonze)
Spike Jonze is Made of Win. I remember when this video came out in what? 1995? It still holds up.

Walk This Way - Run DMC & Aerosmith (dir. ...I have no idea)
They break down the wall!

Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim (dir. Spike Jonze)
Um. This is just so awesome I don't have words. Christopher Walken! Dances!

Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles (dir. Russel Mulcahy)
First video played on MTV. Of course I was going to include it.

Rhythm Nation - Janet Jackson (dir. Dominic Sena)
Oh come on. How many ofyou know the dance? Don't lie.

Jeremy - Pearl Jam (dir. Mark Pellington)
Somewhat to my embarrassment, it took me a REALLY long time to figure out what's going on at the end of the video. And by "a REALLY long time" I mean that I didn't know what was going on until someone explained it to me about five years ago.

Vogue - Madonna (dir. David Fincher)
Hey, remember when Madonna was awesome? And it's David Fincher! Before he started obsessing about like, serial killers and the dark pits of the human soul.

...and okay, here:
Vogue - Madonna (live at the 1995 VMAs)
I love this more than I love the official video.

Oh Spike Jonze, you are so my cracktastical metatext loving boyfriend. Also, you helped bring Jackass to the air. This officially makes you awesome.

Um, clearly I was watching a LOT of music videos. Oh, "Mama Said Knock You Out." SO AWESOME.

Anyway yes. Now it should go to the right video.

Oh, man, I remember so well when MTV came on the air... they'd been hyping it for months, I was so excited, I was sitting there in my living room watching the countdown screen waiting waiting waiting....

AND Buggles just happened to be my very favorite band of the moment, I adored "Video Killed the Radio Star," so when MTV went live and those first few notes came out of my TV I JUMPED UP IN THE AIR AND SQUEEEEEEEEEEED LIKE A SQUEEING THING! and danced around my living room and it was just so perfect and wonderful I was high on it for days.

I haven't seen that video in many many years. Sigh. Thanks for the link so much, I made a YouTube account just so I could favorite it and go back whenever I want and watch it again and again and again.

Man, I love the VMA version of Vogue.

Though I do not know any of the dance to Rhythm Nation, I do have a good part of Thriller in my repetoire.
