I took a digital art class years ago and one of the things I learned in it, other than that I don't really like bright colors, is that I *do* really, really like type. Every picture I made for class involved text in some way unless I was specifically told not to. So, anyway. Someone ([livejournal.com profile] sansets) linked to a Hush Sound primer that included the video below and I liked it and now I want to share.

I started here:

The Lions Roar - The Hush Sound

Duck and Cover

Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles

Are You Gonna Be My Girl? - Jet

Choose Life - Trainspotting (language)

Say What Again - Pulp Fiction (language)

Tramp - Lowell Fulson

*beams* You were one of the people I was definitely thinking about while I was watching these.

They make me want to do a fannish edition which would, I think, be really interesting. How would the "Lie to Me" speech *look* or Buffy's little speech from "Restless"? How do you textually render "Are you ready to be strong?"

I um. Like text a lot.

I love text, and I especially using it in action. Moving text around in an artful way is a whole other skill, though -- you'd think I'd be awesome at it, as a designer and vidder, but it's like starting all over again. Worth the work, though, because YUM.

Have you seen "Stranger Than Fiction"? Oh, the glorious typography! ♥

I like your idea about designing fannish quotes. I could get very excited about a project like that.

*g* I wish I were more creative with the forms and layout of text because I think it'd be really neat to play with.

And...Stranger than Fiction the movie? Because the movie's pretty sweet, but I don't remember typography so much in it. I do, however, really love what the movie Nightwatch did with the subtitles (which is similar to how Heroes does its subtitles with the stealing from comic books). It's just...*neat* to see how people are using type now.

The movie is sweet and uses gorgeous animated type, especially in the beginning -- all the numbers and diagrams floating around Harold's head, remember?

I haven't seen Nightwatch, but I did love Bee Season's use of type as well. There's so much gorgeous stuff being done.

Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] lim's My Brilliant Idea? Best use of type I've ever seen in a fannish work.

Ohhhhhh. Yes! Which is, I suppose, a testament to how well done it was because I didn't notice it as standing out at all and it seemed very organic.

And I haven't seen [livejournal.com profile] lim's vid, but I will check it out on my break.

It's absolutely adorable. And gorgeous. And OMG I should have half the talent she has in her pinky...
