Talk about ways not to spend an evening.

Me: "Okay, I'll call the doctor's office tomorrow and let them know we don't have the MRI films."
Mom: "Why do they need those?"
Me: "Well...we're consulting with a neurosurgeon, mom. They need to know what we're consulting them about."
Mom: "They're going to kill me like they killed your sister."
Me: "..."
Mom: "They did! I swear they killed her."
Me: "I'm pretty sure that's not allowed, mom."
Mom: "They're going to kill me!"
Me: "I'll just go make a copy of your insurance card, okay?"
Mom: "Why do you have so many books in your purse?"
Me: "I...like to read?"

My hand to god, you guys, that is the conversation I just had with my crazy mom.

From earlier:

Me: "So, do you have any symptoms of depression?"
Mom: "No."
Me: "Mom, you just got done telling me how depressed you were."
Mom: "If you tell the doctors things, then they do something!"
Me: "...that's...what we want them to do, mom."
Mom: "Put down no."
Me: *circles yes*

My roommate, who is a nursing student, is always coming home with stories of people who are like your mom and have such a distrust of doctors. It blows my mind, because I've always been the opposite. Even though doctors rarely actually fix me, there's a part of me deeply embedded that's so sure that they are the answer to everything.

The funny thing about all of this is that I'm like, this insane person for everyone else going to the doctor for the least little thing being wrong, but for myself? No. I won't go to the doctor for *anything* because, like my mom, I'm half convinced that when people go to the doctor, they die.

I'm totally push people into going into the doctor for every little thing, then don't do it myself. But my reasoning is that I'm a horrible hypochondriac and would just be wasting time and money to go. Or it always seems like by the time I get an appointment, whatever it is clears up, so why make an appointment?

That's pretty much me. And then I get yelled at by [livejournal.com profile] fox1013 'cause I've had a cough for 2 years and won't go get it checked out.

(I'm going to go! I swear! Just. Not yet.)

It is my Comic Con cough. It starts at the end of comic con and goes...uh, till about a month before the next comic con. Two years running! Good times.

You've only been yelling at me for a few months. Amy's been yelling since two comic cons ago.

I have very little faith in doctors but even less if I don't tell them what's wrong so they don't know. Which I don't. But still.

Anyway, your mum's lucky to have you there for her.

Oh, and *joins people yelling at you*

I … do not even know what to say.

Oh, "Hey, at least you are aware the crazy is in her head and not yours!" That is the one positive out of this interaction.

Every time I see your raptor, I giggle. I can't help myself. I giggle and then I raptor and I smile idiotically at the screen.

It is much appreciated! But I signed up for benefits and now only need to find a PCP. I...do not actually know how to go about finding a doctor, but I figure I'll pick one that sounds nice and go from there.

That is a good start. You can also ask coworkers if they have any recommendations.

*snuggles* When I go, I'm totally (and possibly overly) truthful. My mom goes all the time but lies. Our neuroses are complementary!
