OH MUSE, NEVER CHANGE.

So I am playing the practice mode of Guitar Hero III, which has Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" on it. And in practice mode, it splits the song into different parts so you can practice them, and mostly they are labeled things like "intro" and "outro" and "bridge" and "chorus" and standard things like that.

Knights of Cydonia is labeled:
mount thine steed
gallping rampage
enduring solitude
breakneck desperado
breakneck desperado 2
a cowboy's verse
mount thine steed 2
hastening pursuit
ammending chorus
galloping triplets
metal battleground
ammending chorus 2
metal battleground 2
a free man's laurels

It would be unbearable if I didn't think they were actually trying for gloriously, hilariously pretentious. But anyone who can make the video that goes along with this song cannot be totally out of touch with a sense of humor.

And if you haven't heard the song or seen the SPECTACULARLY HILARIOUS video:

Nerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrds.

I think it's more a tribute to the genre films of the 70s, actually. Westerns (specifically the spaghetti western), which lead to space opera (which are called space operas because they're a direct descendant of the western, which was at one point called a horse opera), and also wacky kung fu movies.

Firefly itself is a throwback to that whole era, so both Firefly and "Knights of Cydonia" are coming from the same basic source and paying homage to that.

Er. Which is a long winded way of saying that I think it's more a tribute to the films of Sergio Leone than it is anything else.

Hee! Mine too! I love that video. It's so amazingly hilarious and cheesy.

Muuuuuuuuse. I seriously heart my pretentious art rock nerd boyfriends. At Almost Acoustic Christmas, they played the theme from Close Encounters right before they went into Knights of Cydonia.

Nerds are awesome.

What's really awesome about the song sections? Is that they actually make *sense* when you're listening to the song.

Oh, Muse.

Plus, yeah, the video for KoC is just made of cheese and awesome. As is the video for "Invincible." It is hi-larious.
