I bought a new bag! It does not have skulls on it! This is thanks to [livejournal.com profile] annavtree taking my last post as a cry for help and informing me that she'd have to intervene if I bought one. Anna is very scary when she is stern. Anyway. It is one of the mossimo guy's messenger bags from Target. I can put my Umbrella Academy pin on it. Hurrah!

I also bought a completely self-indulgent mary sue trashy smutty-fantasy pseudo-vampire novel that is basically a mashup between LKH and Anne Bishop with like, extra bonus smut (no, seriously, it's *gloriously* trashy. there's random sexin' in the first 10 pages of the first book! I am now on book three (also completely random sexin' in the first ten pages! woo! it's not even good smut!). Um. Yeah, IDEK. Stuff I would not read in fic if you paid me, I will happily shell out money for. In this vein, I also bought a Mercedes Lackey novel. Seriously, this is my book equivalent of comfort food. Over the top ridiculous princesses! fairy tale retellings that aren't even particularly good! stuff I don't have to turn my brain on for! Also a Patricia Briggs novel (I really like her Mercy i-forgot-her-last-name books and I liked both Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood.)

Also, Amy made me read The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. A++++. And by "made," I mean that I whined to her about not having enough in the way of SF/F books to read with people of color as the mains and she said, "You should get this!" and so I did. Because Amy is magic. It is like that godawful duo of books by Nick Sagan except with likeable characters and a plot that didn't make me want to punch people in the face until they cried!

And then I was listening to my uh, bandom apocalypse au mix and it made me happy. Nas! Gnarls Barkley! Muse! Korn covering Pink Floyd! Scarface! Outkast! yeah, don't ask. There are mutants and Lupe Fiasco and Andy Hurley save the world through the power of their sheer outrage and blowing stuff up.

other bandom aus I have in my head:

1) genderswap steampunk pseudo-boarding school weirdness. I DON'T EVEN KNOW. But man, let me tell you, there's croquet and girl!Patrick and boys!Frank, Bob, and Ray spend an AWFUL lot of time building things in a shed set conveniently far from the house in case something blows up while boys!Gerard and Mikey and girls!Pete and Andy save the world make the world a better place through the power of their sheer outrage and blowing stuff up while girl!Joe and boy!Matt Cortez make faces at everyone being nuts. Meanwhile, Brian Schecter and Bob McLynn realize they're running a home for wayward revolutionaries. Soundtrack by Rasputina.

2) vampire shenanigans! Joe saves the world through the power of his sheer outrage and Patrick blows shit up! Gerard sees dead people! Butch Walker leads a pack of traveling vampire hunters! No one REALLY knows what happened to Tupac the vampire slayer! Soundtrack by Muse, Lupe Fiasco, and A Perfect Circle (and also the bandom apocalypse mix. It's kind of an all purpose one).

3) this one I share with [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o: Madame Victoria's House of Discreet Gentlemen! Because who doesn't love utterly cracktastic and anachronistic regency hookers?

4) Travis McCoy: literature major! He tries to explain to Patrick that no, really, Titus Andronicus is fucking awesome because the white dudes are all kinds of fucked up and crazy and the black dude tries to destroy them all 'cause they're a bunch of racist assholes who deserve to die! (all true, btw) and that a lot of hip hop is pretty much exactly like the confessional poets, except with more swearing and a lot of ego. Patrick seduces him by getting his friend Lupe to recite John Donne to a beat Patrick produces!

because you know, why settle for ONE thing to be an AU when you can indiscriminately shove five things into it for your own amusement?

WHY DO YOU KEEP TEASING SO? You should share the names of your trashy urban fantasy novels, so that we may all share, man.

Urban fantasy = the Mercy Thompson novels by Patricia Briggs.

Ridiculous Mary Sue Pseudo Vampire Smut = anything by Sunny. Mona Lisa *verb*-ing (3 books. or maybe 4) and Lucinda, Darkly. Terrrrrrrible books. Absolutely terrible and yet cracktastically hilarious.

I like the Mercy Thompson books so far. I'll have to pick up Sunny. Sadly, my library system doesn't have them so I'll have to pay real cash money. :(

Have you tried the Kitty Norville books by Carrie Vaughn? I think you might like them.

I have! I like the Kitty Norville books a lot. There are werewolves! And mostly they think the vampires are tools.

Sunny is...if you can avoid paying full price, I suggest it. I keep lucking out and having either a coupon, a gift certificate, or both when I go to buy them.

I am totally neither stern nor scary. Especially not while I was on the phone with you.

I knoooooow. It is so happy and awesome and Travis really loves Sylvia Plath, man, he *does*, and John Donne and also he thinks Othello gets this overinflated reputation in drama 'cause it's like, the good play with a black dude in it by Shakespeare, but no, the big O is pretty much about how Iago is wants to tap that and hates himself for it so he must destroy the object of his unnatural lusts, which really makes it all about how the white man keeps the brother man down, even in a galaxy far far away Shakespeare.

not that I've thought about this or anything.

omg, nancy farmer = love.

if you have not read The Ear, The Eye and The Arm by her, you must also go get it as quickly as possible. do yourself a favor, because you'll probably have to order it anyway, but get them to order the trade size and not the mass market unless you love tiny, tiny, tiny type. it is her best book and exactly the kind of sci-fi that i think rocks--a mix of high tech and low tech all rolled together. and it's so, so, so good. i mean, amazing.

ahem. i'll stop flailing now. but she's really good.

Ooooh. I will totally keep that in mind; part of my complaint to Amy that resulted in her reccing Nancy Farmer to me was that I wanted sci fi that actually felt sciencey rather than space-opera-y. I am weirdly picky about my sci fi.
