I wish there were a pandora for books.

...alternately, i wish pandora would see that I like Muse and Nina Simone and Robert Johnson and give me some wacky, unknown progressive yet minimalist blues band fronted by a female singer. Maybe with backup scary British guy wailing in the background. DON'T JUDGE ME, OKAY.

um. you know. or maybe it could be co-fronted by pstump (i love you pstump and your a capella thingawhatsit on Folie a Deux).

I'm enjoying 40,000 in Gehenna quite a lot and I'm about half way through, now. Um. One thing that I've noticed through both books (Merchanter's Luck and this one) is this weird...distance between me as reader and the characters. Which may just be me, but it's kind of hmm-inducing. I like Ma Pia a lot, though.

Also, if I could find more songs a la Nina Simone's "Be My Husband" or the a capella thingawhatsit on Folie A Deux, that would be awesomesauce.

One day, I will tell you all the story of Tupac the Vampire Slayer and Dexter Holland: Crazy Scientist Against Vampires Eating Him.

Not exactly it, but have you tried Skunk Anansie? More punk than blues, I guess. How do you feel about Portishead?

I like Skunk Anansie a fair amount and I like Portishead for, uh, when it's 2 am and I want to fall asleep. *shuffles feet* I have one of her albums, but I don't listen to it all that much.

I love Cherryh in general, but depending on the book she tends to go more for the epic feel rather than the personal. For personal in the Merchanter's universe try Finity's End. Cyteen is awesome on so many levels, but it isn't as personal as it could be either. I loved Downbelow Station as well, and it's more personal than Cyteen probably.

Her Rider series and Fortress series both have strong characters, even though Fortress is epic in feel as well (it's more fantasy than sci fi though). With Rider though, you have telepathic "horses" and that is not appealing to many people.

For big sci fi adventure with 1 main character, try the Foreigner universe. I found it a little dry because it was as much about the politics of language as anything else, but still interesting.

I don't mind telepathic animals so much. Depending on the cheese factor, I may roll my eyes, but there's a part of me with a soft spot for them.

and ooooh, politics of language. ooooh.

I make notes! yay for recs!

I wish there were a pandora for books.

I KNOW RIGHT? I want this to exist so much. :(

Have you heard Jolie Holland at all? She's a bit more folkish and can be a bit weird-for-weird's-sake, but "Old Fashioned Morphine" and "Amen" are totally fantastic.

Have you heard The Kills? As I'd say that' a reasonably accurate description of them! Some of their stuff is pretty bluesy, though not all of it.

Might also be worth checking out Florence and the Machine, though she hasn't released any albums yet, just a few random singles.

Every time I think about it, it makes me happy. Not the least reason of which is that I *then* get to think about Snoop Dogg: Vampire Slayer and then I laugh and laugh and wiggle in glee.

I wish there were a pandora for books.

i haven't tried either of these, but here are two sites that are attempting to fill that role: BookLamp (CNET article here) and What Should I Read Next?
