i keep wanting to do a mulifandom PoC vid and running up against the problems of wanting to celebrate characters of color while knowing from years of fandom that celebration doesn't seem to get the job done wrt raising visibility. so then i'm all, 'okay, where do i find a song that raises the problems but which isn't overly preachy and which is listenable enough to make me okay with having to listen to the song ninety bazillion imes and which is accessible and...' etc. it is hard!

and as problematic as he can sometimes be and as much as i hesitate to vid him again, kanye really does fit the bill.

I WILL PAY YOU CASH MONEY TO VID TO KANYE AGAIN. YOU COULD DO HIS WHOLE OEVRE. THROUGH THE WIRE. GOLDDIGGER, GOOD LIFE, HEY MAMA, HEARTLESS.

And then you will make the crack-addled Kara/Lee vid of my heart to "Regulate" and then Alber Elbaz will appear at my door and offer to be my personal dressmaker.

Or you could do the CoC vid to One Mic, which I am still convinced would work really really well and be about 17 billion kinds of awesome. I mean, as much as Kanye would fit, you know that song is a perfect match and I would argue that it is totally accessible enough.

Other songs that would work: A Milli (although how you would vid that song I do not know), 99 Problems (which would make an awesome meta statement and get half of fandom to hate you!) or Tupac's Keep Your Head Up. Stop me cause I could do this ALL DAY.

(You get the Sasha icon cause you are just that awesome.)

NO NO WAIT. Hard Knock Life by Jay-Z. YOU KNOW THAT I AM RIGHT. It would make an awesome CoC vid.

I still have to listen to the Jay Z song again. But the Kanye song is so good!

Oh Kanye. <3 I almost posted about how much I want to do a gunn/wes vid to "love lockdown."

Work has been particularly crazy so I haven't had a chance to talk to anyone about it.

OMG THE CRAZY

I love this idea. No thoughts on the song, though. I'll let you know if I have a bolt of lightning.

Okay, actually, this might sound crazy, but do you know the mashup of "Rock With You" and "Under Pressure", "Jacko Under Pressure" by Go Home Productions?

I...think I might actually have that mashup somewhere on my computer.

I can't think of any songs that celebrate multiple ethnicities ... I can think of ones that are interesting variations on "I'm black and I'm proud" or "Black is beautiful"...

Soul on Ice by Me'shell NdegeOcello? It's mostly black-specific, but it's interesting anyway. (It may be too aggressive for fandom.)

...there's the humpty dance. :D?

I was actually thinking Kanye West's "Amazing." Because it amuses me.

I think the amount of win in the concept of a vid of ANY kind to The Humpty Dance cannot be textually rendered. :DDDDDD!

That does make me think that there might be some suitably inclusive psychedelic funk, although I don't have enough knowledge of the genre to make specific song recommendations. :(

There would be SO MUCH source to get it's kind of ridiculous. Heartening, but ridiculous.

Hee hee! I actually had a long conversation with [livejournal.com profile] annavtree about it, like all, "Do I include Lana Lang? Because the actress is, but the character is explicitly not a PoC...how about Cordelia? Do I include Adama? How about Inara?" and yeah.

So I need to figure out a) the song, b) the thesis, and then c) the most effective visual argument.

The frontrunners on song are Jay-z's "Hard Knock Life" (which samples from Annie!) and Kanye West's "Amazing" which is where the subject title of the post came from. We shall see.

Charisma Carpenter is a PoC? Look at how much I don't know!

I remember reading that EJO believes Bill Adama's first name is Guillermo, and that as far as he's concerned he's a Latino. I always thought that was cool.

I kind of love the idea of a hip-hop song that samples a Broadway musical. (:

LOL. I have an unfinished vid for LaT, and one for Heroes, and now this one, and vidlets like Gunn to "Charles in Charge" and maybe Peter Petrelli to "I Believe I Can Fly" and stuff.

Oh, and Mammoth to "Full of Grace." Can't forget that one!

I would pay cash money for all of those except Mammoth to Full of Grace. Mammoth is not a movie I have ever watched, so I cannot anticipate its vid with glee. But Peter Petrelli to I Believe I Can Fly is just so, so, so beautiful. And Gun! Charles in Charge! Perfection!
