i keep wanting to do a mulifandom PoC vid and running up against the problems of wanting to celebrate characters of color while knowing from years of fandom that celebration doesn't seem to get the job done wrt raising visibility. so then i'm all, 'okay, where do i find a song that raises the problems but which isn't overly preachy and which is listenable enough to make me okay with having to listen to the song ninety bazillion imes and which is accessible and...' etc. it is hard!
and as problematic as he can sometimes be and as much as i hesitate to vid him again, kanye really does fit the bill.

Date: 2009-01-26 09:27 am (UTC)And then you will make the crack-addled Kara/Lee vid of my heart to "Regulate" and then Alber Elbaz will appear at my door and offer to be my personal dressmaker.
Or you could do the CoC vid to One Mic, which I am still convinced would work really really well and be about 17 billion kinds of awesome. I mean, as much as Kanye would fit, you know that song is a perfect match and I would argue that it is totally accessible enough.
Other songs that would work: A Milli (although how you would vid that song I do not know), 99 Problems (which would make an awesome meta statement and get half of fandom to hate you!) or Tupac's Keep Your Head Up. Stop me cause I could do this ALL DAY.
(You get the Sasha icon cause you are just that awesome.)
NO NO WAIT. Hard Knock Life by Jay-Z. YOU KNOW THAT I AM RIGHT. It would make an awesome CoC vid.

Date: 2009-01-26 03:06 pm (UTC)Okay, actually, this might sound crazy, but do you know the mashup of "Rock With You" and "Under Pressure", "Jacko Under Pressure" by Go Home Productions?

Date: 2009-01-26 04:58 pm (UTC)Soul on Ice by Me'shell NdegeOcello? It's mostly black-specific, but it's interesting anyway. (It may be too aggressive for fandom.)

Date: 2009-01-27 11:39 pm (UTC)I was actually thinking Kanye West's "Amazing." Because it amuses me.

Date: 2009-01-28 01:32 am (UTC)That does make me think that there might be some suitably inclusive psychedelic funk, although I don't have enough knowledge of the genre to make specific song recommendations. :(

Date: 2009-01-28 12:11 am (UTC)So I need to figure out a) the song, b) the thesis, and then c) the most effective visual argument.
The frontrunners on song are Jay-z's "Hard Knock Life" (which samples from Annie!) and Kanye West's "Amazing" which is where the subject title of the post came from. We shall see.

Date: 2009-01-28 01:27 am (UTC)I remember reading that EJO believes Bill Adama's first name is Guillermo, and that as far as he's concerned he's a Latino. I always thought that was cool.
I kind of love the idea of a hip-hop song that samples a Broadway musical. (:
