I just want it to be said that dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets are made of win. They are much better than boring nugget shaped nuggets and infinitely tastier than creepy Mickey Mouse Head shaped nuggets.
Plus, I like to pretend the tyrannosaurus rex nuggets are really raptors. GRAR!
also, I am out of tea, earl greyhot. >:(
um. there was something else I was going to say, but I have forgotten it in the time it took me to make the frowny face.
OH. Now I remember! Y'all, 4 day memberships with preview night for Comic Con 2010 are ALL SOLD OUT. ALREADY. 4 day memberships are still available, though. So, you know, for the people who uh, were maybe coming out here in July for Nerdtopia Does Giant Party With Maybe Some Vows Thrown In who want to do Comic Con as well might want to start looking at passes. :D? :D?
also, on an unrelated to most of this note: you guys, HOW AWESOME IS SUPERMAN, HUH? I MEAN, SERIOUSLY. ALSO, I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS, MARK WAID, BIRTHRIGHT IS FABULOUS. A++++ work. I like it better than Kingdom Come (what? I DO. Because you know who's utterly amazing in Birthright? LOIS FUCKING LANE. THAT'S WHO. ALSO THE KENTS. AND ALSO CLARK. AND JIMMY. AND PERRY. AND SUPES.)
as you were.
protip: rum cake is amazing.
also, so so so many people fail at understanding the basics of capitalism that it constantly amazes me. i'm not saying capitalism uber alles or anything, but jeez oh pete's, it is not actually a crime for a company to want to make money off their product.
an in conclusion: Ruthie Henshall is awesome.

My opinion-your mileage may vary.
Date: 2009-11-05 05:54 am (UTC)The crime is when they do so in a way that is exploitative of/damaging to their workers, other human beings, and the environment (which includes our animal friends). I like to call this "accountable capitalism", although I am sure there is a better term.
Also, the financial industry (is this the right word?) does need to be regulated-we have more regulation of that industry here in Canada than in the US, and we were less affected by the economic downturn because of these regulations. It's all about balancing things.
Re: My opinion-your mileage may vary.
Date: 2009-11-07 11:25 pm (UTC)But leaving aside responsible management of resources and the obligation to contribute back to the world and community, which I doubt anyone would argue is a fair and reasonable thing to expect from companies, people constantly act like anything that is designed to make a profit -- and here is the part that actually infuriated me all day and has been continuing to do so all week -- is done so at the cost of the consumer.
Like, I'm sorry, my company makes a very successful game. And AT THE PLAYERS' REQUEST have added additional OPTIONAL services which do not in any way impact game play, are not required for enjoyment of the game, and let me reiterate, are ENTIRELY OPTIONAL. And then we're subjected to 20+ pages of forum comments, articles, phone calls, etc telling us we're money grubbing corporate whores who don't care about anything except making some money.
Excuse me? REALLY? SOME OF THAT MONEY GOES TO CHARITY. A charity, I might add, that we have worked with before. We have company initiatives to carpool or to use public transportation or to walk or bike which are used by a large part of our company. We encourage healthy eating and nutrition for the employees, as well as excercise in-house. We give back to the employees and the community, while consistently releasing a product that meets not only our customer's standards of excellence but which match and exceed our own, to the point where we will delay a product if we think it's not ready.
But SOMEHOW that's not good enough. So I got really super mad and I understand that you're not talking about my company, but it's still...frustrating. Because the customers are telling us these exact same things -- as for example, why doesn't ALL the money go to charity -- and all I can really say is, we're a for-profit company. Our responsibility to our shareholders AND OUR EMPLOYEES is to maximize our profits without releasing sub par services and products. And for all the people think we're rolling in money, yeah, we make a lot, but we also cost a lot to maintain. rargh.

Date: 2009-11-08 06:16 am (UTC)I was confused-sometimes when people say "it's not a crime to want to make money" what they mean is "a company should be able to do anything to maximize its profits, even if those actions are damaging to the environment or involve exploiting workers or anything at all" and I was thinking that didn't sound like something you would think. And I was right but had missed what you were saying.
