Radiohead's new album In Rainbows comes out on October 10th. What makes this a big deal is twofold:

1) Radiohead is not on a label. They're releasing this album on their own as a digital download on their website.

2) The price? It's up to you. No really. It's up to you.

Why this is something to be watched:
A Record Price for a Radiohead Album: $0 - Los Angeles Times

Pay What You Want - Time Magazine

Radiohead bends Record Industry Over Conference Table and Goes To Town - Best Week Ever

So, anyway, in honor of this and because Radiohead is one of my all time favorite bands, I give you a musicspam. All songs are hosted on my webspace, so right-click save. Comments are awesome, especially because I love a) talking about music, b) talking about Radiohead, and c) talking about how much of an impact this is going to have on an already struggling industry that's based itself on an increasingly obsolete business model and which is being shaken up left and right by the new media.

To sum up:
1) Radiohead is awesome.
2) The new album comes out on 10/10/07.
3) The band is letting you decide how much you think their music is worth.

So, okay, below the cut you will find the set list from the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre show on Friday night. To go along with the setlist, I've included live versions of all the Muse songs, the entirety of the JFK speech they excerpted from, and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" which Muse didn't exactly cover, but they played the riff and it was AWESOME.

Muse set list: 9/21/07 )

And oh, Muse. You have all the subtlety of a brick to the head sometimes. *hearts you*

The text of the US tour intro to "Take a Bow"
The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings.

For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence--on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice.

It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations.

Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried, not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no secret is revealed.

That is why the Athenian lawmaker Solon decreed it a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy.

I am asking your help in the tremendous task of informing and alerting the American people..., confident that with your help, man will be what he was born to be, free and independent.

I *have* "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" and yet it just came on KROQ and I stopped everything I was doing to listen. WTF brain? Also, yay! Is FOB being played on KROQ again? Because that is pretty freaking super.

Anyway. I keep...forgetting how not alternative rock IOH is until I hear it up against other music in that same genre. It's not structured the same, it's not orchestrated the same, it's not sung the same, it's not produced the same, none of it. I don't know a lot about the production process, but what FOB does in terms of their production values is a lot closer to pop and hip hop in terms of how clean it is. Which really, let's face it, isn't a surprise considering they got *Babyface* to produce "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" and Patrick's own production style seems to head closer to that direction than anywhere else and Butch Walker does the same thing on some of the albums he produces. Oh, pop rock. I heart you so.

SO CAL PEOPLE. Is anyone other than [livejournal.com profile] ladysorka and me going to Street Scene next Saturday? Or, you know, to the Muse show the night before? Saturday acts are Muse, Panic at the Disco, TAI... and others. GCH is on Sunday (*fist of fury*)

In my continuing mission to bring you all music, I want to point you to a couple of things that kroq is doing.

1) KROQ of the 80s - All day every day, alternative rock of the 80s.

2) LA Invasion is tomorrow and being webcast on the website. Acts include: Smashing Pumpkins, the FOO FIGHTERS, Velvet Revolver, Chris Cornell, Cypress Hill, Paramore, Hot Hot Heat, Against Me, Perry Farrell, and Kid Rock.

*sulks* Butch Walker tickets for the Troubador are sold out. I will have to soothe my soul with baseball, I think (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs Cleveland Indians. It'll be my first live sporting event! isn't that exciting?)

...heh. Architecture in Helsinki is playing the Troubador in November.

Hm. I wonder if I can get Street Scene tickets. Strangely, not to see Panic! because no. Well, okay, I actually would totally go see them at Street Scene, but only because the Killers will also be there and I think I would kind of love to see a Brandon Flowers vs Ryan Ross slapfight while Muse, TAI, and GCH kick back and smoke some weed and do Cotton-and-Pepper-esque commentary on it.

Street Scene lineup:
The Killers, MUSE!, SOCIAL D!, Panic! At the Disco, Slightly Stoopid, G. Love and Special Sauce, Arctic Monkeys, Air, OZOMATLI!, Louis XIV, Too Short, Brand New, Editors, the Academy Is, Mickey Avalon, Matt Costa, Jack's Mannequin, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Paolo Nutini, Mika, The Village People (!!!), Mims, B-Side Players, Van Stone, Infected Mushrooms, Augustana, Gym Class Heroes (oh, Travis!), and other people.

So far, my upcoming concert schedule:
9/8/07 - Butch Walker @ The Troubador sold out (*sob*)
9/21/07 - Muse @ Verizon Wireless Amp - YAAAAAY!
9/22/07 - 9/23/07 - Street Scene @ Del Mar Fairgrounds maaaaaaybe
10/26/07 - 10/28/07 - Voodoo Music Experience @ City Park, New Orleans LA (working on this one instead of Vegoose because [livejournal.com profile] thelionforreal is wily and has promised me that we can get drunk together and watch FOB/GCH. The only thing that makes this okay is that I will definitely get to see Muse in September and RATM is apparently playing Voodoo Fest too. Also Patrick and Travis at the same place! For awesome, you guys. And I will get to see New Orleans before the Gulf of Mexico eats it.)

I should probably not do Street Scene. Probably. 'Cause I was tore up after seeing Muse last time (yes, I managed to injure myself flailing and headbanging) and three solid days of sex live music is probably not the best thing ever for my voice. Or my hearing. Except that it sounds really good and also I can spend the entire weekend drunk and going, "WOOOOO!" and throwing horns.

But dude. Muse! The very next day! Again! Ozomatli! Social D! The possibility of a Brandon Flowers vs Ryan Ross fight! Travis and Lesbian Beckett in the same place at the same time! The little nutjobs in Brand New! The Village People! It's very tempting.

Ack. Decisions are *hard*.

Awesome Grammy performances: Kanye West with John Legend and the Blind Boys of Alabama in 2005, and Jamie Foxx with drumlines in 2006; Alicia Keys in 2002, with Jamie Foxx in 2005; Christina Aguilera in 2007; Mary J Blige in 2002; no one seems to have uploaded the Church of Eternal Funk bit from 2004 which is a tragedy. Woe. )

The quality is total shit, but it's still my favorite vid of any fandom ever. When I think of vids, this is what I think of. It is a frothy delightful confection of poppin' fresh dance moves. Also, if I had "Rumpshaker" I would totally upload it. Sadly, I don't.

I do not at all remember who did this vid, or else I would totally give credit. Um, if it's you, let me know and I will take it down or whatever.

Man, I am incredibly fucking crankypants today due to various things, not the least of which is my nephew being a shit, but one of the things that makes me feel better is music. So here, music by the Foo Fighters because Dave Grohl is made of awesome. Also, seriously you guys, they're dorky enough that the band is named after "mysterious aerial phenomena." *hearts them*

Foo Fighters: 1 cover song, 3 acoustic tracks, and the live album. Track listing under the cut. )

They're showing the full concert on Bravo, so. New post. Also, is it just me or is the sound mix REALLY off?

I think people should come on LJ Talk or AIM and watch with me (mimesere on both LJ Talk and AIM). Er. I am on PST, so that is what I am seeing because of GODDAMN TAPE DELAY.

OMG, such AWFUL sound mixing wtf. Yes, I'm going to keep bitching about this.

Kenna, KT Tunstall, Taking Back Sunday, Keith Urban, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, AFI )

Yes, FOB gets their own cut. Awwww, Luda is looking forward to seeing The Police! Aww! )

Akon, John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge, FOO FIGHTERS OMG, Alicia Keys is made of awesomeness, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson )

KANYE WEST FTW. No, really, it's an AMAZING set. )

The Beastie Boys in London, Bon Jovi, more Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Roger Waters, Lenny Kravitz, UB40, the Police )

...Duff wasn't this annoying before. I know she wasn't.

And okay, now they are rerunning performances from the other venues! WTF!

Okay, Billy Corgan, that shit was JUST TACKY. WOW.

So far? Best set from LE: New York = Bon Jovi, followed very very closely by Kanye West and Alicia Keys. I would not have guessed that I would put Bon Jovi ahead of Kanye like, ever, but no, that set totally fucking rocked.

So, I totally did not introduce my shiny shiny icon of joy and happiness which combines two of the things I love most. *points* [livejournal.com profile] donella gave it to me! She is awesome! It is music! and it is super! Who doesn't love music that is super?

So, [livejournal.com profile] annavtree totally linked me to one of the new Kanye West (or is it Lupe Fiasco?) tracks, featuring Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco (or Kanye) and what did I notice first? Was it Kanye being awesome? Lupe? No. No, I noticed the plaintive white dude moaning over piano.

Oh, Thom fucking Yorke.

I can't tell which part delights me more: that I recognized Thom Yorke in a place I was absolutely not expecting to hear him or that the song samples from "The Eraser."

Us Placers - Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Pharrell (link totally gacked from Green Plastic Radiohead)

Karma Police - Panic! At the Disco (live in Denver. Check out Spencer on drums. When you are older, boo, you will *totally* be super hot.)

I still say that no one should be able to tell what the words are to Radiohead songs. No enunciating! I should not hear the "r" in karma! It just sounds wrong!

Go To Sleep (Jonny Greenwood goes crazy on his solo.)
2+2=5
Idioteque (absolutely phenomenal percussion.)
Street Spirit (I *love* this song. Love it. I would have this song's plaintively creepy babies)
Life in a Glass House (horns! love love love)

So, you know. There's this guy, right? And his name is Butch Walker. And I like him.

A lot.

The way the rest of bandom seems to like Panic? That is how I like Butch Walker. Except with less gay porn. Also he's older.

Musically, Butch Walker runs the gamut from alt-country ("Rich People Die Unhappy") to power pop/rock ("Suburbia") to full on ubersincere (and gorgeous) ballads ("Cigarette Lighter Love Song," "Take Tomorrow"), to harder rock ("Lights Out"), to T-Rex inspired glam ("Hot Girls in Good Moods"). I may not have known that The Who and the Guess Who were different, but I do know that Butch Walker is *good* and has earned his entirely rabid and kind of crazy fan following.

Anyway! Butch Walker is a singer, songwriter, hot shot producer of power pop/rock, and an enormous dork. For the bandom people: he produced Santi for TAI as well as their cover of "Superman" on the Sounds of Superman compilation and also "Don't You Know Who I Think I Am" for FOB *and* he does backup vocals on "This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race," "Hum Hallelujah," "Bang the Doldrums," and "You're Crashing, But You're No Wave." And he was at the BMI panel with Patrick.

For non bandom people: Butch writes songs for and produces Pink, Avril Lavigne, American Hi Fi, Bowling for Soup, The Donnas, SR 71, Stroke 9, and a whole mess of others. He was named Rolling Stone's Producer of the Year in 2005. He used to be in a band called Marvelous 3 and *their* hit song (obv. written by Butch) was called "Freak of the Week." Now he tours solo, with various members of American Hi Fi, the Let's-Go-Out-Tonites (more about them later), and sometimes Avril Lavigne plays drums for him.

He's just totally awesome and I love him to pieces. So, thank you for Butch Walker, Patrick. If I loved you for nothing else, I'd love you for leading me to him.

I know, I know, this is a lot of text to read, but I REALLY LOVE HIM, Y'ALL. I have lots to say.
