Jan. 6th, 2007 12:15 amWas financially irresponsible and spent heaps of cash today.
Loot:
-1 bottle (30mL) of Jo Malone "154". Named after the first boutique in London, 154 is a chameleon-like fragrance. Allow yourself to be led on an olfactory journey - from citrus to herbaceous lavender and basil, finishing with a woody base of sandalwood and vetiver that quite simply captivates the senses. Whatever, wanky description, it smells woody and lavendery and made of win. I also quite liked the Amber & Lavender scent. So maybe once my bottle is done, I will go buy that. Anyway, 154 smells more like men's cologne than it does women's perfume and that is just fine by me, as I tend to prefer the smell of men's cologne. FTW!
-1 tube Sugar Blossom Hand Treatment from Fresh. This was for my mom. Mostly it was a bribe to get her to stop talking to me.
-Some sort of regency Buffy romance novel. Seriously. It is a regency romance starring one girl in all the world who exists to killinate on vampire a-holes. I can't be bothered to remember the title. There was a girl, she was wearing a corset, she had a stake. Pretty much that's all I need. Apparently, I'm perfectly fine with texts that have vampires in them as long as someone is always trying to kill said vampires. Preferably the person I am supposed to sympathize with.
-Some other novel by Michelle Sagara. I dunno. It looked fluffy and like it did not require brainpower.
-1 ticket to Pan's Labyrinth. That movie is *wrong* y'all. Wrong and totally gorgeous. There were parts where I had to hide my face.
-1 Naruto t-shirt. This is a gift for my boss who loves Naruto.
-1 hot fudge sundae from Ben & Jerry's (one scoop chocolate fudge brownie, one scoop bailey's irish cream).
Loot I did not pay for:
-Jo Malone samples for Lavender & Amber, Grapefruit, and Lime Basil Mandarin. Can we tell I do not actually like sweet scents?
-Fresh samples for Sake Bath, and perfumes of Sugar, Cannabis Santal, and Sake.
Loot I did not pay for and did not actually get, but damn it was tempting:
-Oscar Wilde action figure. No, really.
Media consumed:
-The entire Muse discography. Fuck, they rock. More on this later.
-The entire Radiohead discography. They also rock.
-The entire My Chemical Romance Discography. ...er. To my everlasting shame, much of my musical taste could legitimately be described as emo.
-Size 14 Is Not Fat, Either. Hey, have I mentioned how happy these books make me? Because amateur detective not!Britney is awesome. It is all of the fun of early VMars (no! really! *god*, I'm still just so bitter) coupled with not!Britney and a heap of adorable. It totally overcomes my aversion to first-person narrative![1] It overcomes my only-two-years-old aversion to amateur detectives! It overcomes my general dislike of mystery novels! Meg Cabot FTW!
-Assorted regency romance novels the titles of which I cannot be bothered to remember.
-The Codex Alera (Furies of Calderon, Academ's Fury, Cursor's Fury) by Jim Butcher. These books are weird for me, because when I am not actively reading them, I don't think of them much. But I enjoy the *hell* out of myself when I am reading them. And sometimes I think, "I do not much like these characters," and then I read parts with them and am sad when those parts are done. Go figure. And I liked this pseudo-Rome a damn sight better than I liked GGK's pseudo-Rome which just...frustrated the hell out of me.
I think it is time for my annual re-read of Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, and The Lions of Al-Rassan. Of course, this largely requires finding them from wherever I put them after my last annual read. Also in the annual re-read: The Sparrow (Mary Doria Russell), Night Watch (Terry Pratchett), Thud! (Terry Pratchett), Carpe Jugulum (Terry Pratchett), Good Omens (Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman), The Kindly Ones (Neil Gaiman), The Princess Bride (William Goldman), Outlaws of Sherwood (Robin McKinley), Beauty (Robin McKinley), A Canticle for Liebowitz (Walter M Miller, Jr), Bellwether (Connie Willis), The Doomsday Book (Connie Willis), To Say Nothing of the Dog (Connie Willis), Persuasion (Jane Austen), Bet Me (Jennifer Crusie). These are my comfort books.
Anyway. That's me. But hey, I smell *fabulous* right now.
[1] Yeah, so it turns out I am kind of weird about this, as my *entire* problem with first-person narrative goes like this:
-Book: "I did such and such a thing because of reason thus-and-so."
-Me: "No, I didn't. I wouldn't do that. That is dumb. Stop speaking in my voice, bitch."
Because when I read, I hear it in my own voice in my head. So it is me saying it to me. And no. I do not have this problem with listening to audio books in first person, because there is a person speaking the "I" who is not me. Interestingly, I also do not have this problem with second person narrative, as it makes me say "You" in my head and therefore it is not me.
