Date: 2008-05-16 05:06 am (UTC)I would like to know your opinion on why, in any genderswap fic, if the genderswap is male to female and menstruation is discussed, the male-to-female character always has killer cramps and is in agony? I've been reading such fic relating to Supernatural, but I know it exists elsewhere as well, and I don't get it. I'm not always in agonizing pain, so why are they?
That's been bothering me.

Date: 2008-05-16 05:10 am (UTC)But, for a slightly less snarky answer, I think that it's because menstruation is one of those things that is exclusively female and which has no male equivalent, including the hormonal changes and the cramps and whatnot, so when it's made extreme like that -- agonizing cramps, crazy mood swings, etc -- it's kind of like the author saying, "OH YEAH, HAVE SOME MENSTRUATION, WIMPY BOY, THIS IS WHAT WOMEN DEAL WITH ALL THE TIME!" without actually dealing with the part where a lot of women...don't.
But honestly, I think that male to female genderswap is one of those things where femaleness gets exaggerated to a kind of comical degree. or something.
