Ask me my opinion of any fannish topic. Show, character, storyline, meta issues, kerfuffle, you name it. I am fearless! Just don't get mad at me if you don't like what you hear, man.

(also, somewhat randomly, I keep meaning to post my Wesley and Boromir mixes but I keep getting distracted from uploading the music. Fail, me.)

Why are people stupid? And how wrong are people who are mean to pete Wentz?

People are stupid just to make us sad. Also to promote supervillainy amongst the non-stupid.

And people who are mean to Pete are wrong like...a wrong, wrong thing of wrongness.

Fred from Angel!

I like the concept of Fred and there were times that I really, really liked her. I mean, I *loved* the idea of having a physicist in the mix 'cause I love physics and her introduction was awesome, with the crazy-yet-rational and the competence and everything. So I was really really excited.

And then the physicist thing went nowhere, which is sad, and she became Really Super Duper Special and everyone loved her and she got over her craziness in a way that felt really contrived. Plus, you know, I'm not gonna lie, she broke up my OTP. But I could have lived with that! But yeah, it was one of those things where I was expected to think she was the bees knees without really being shown *why* and I have a problem with that, when it's anyone (please see my all consuming and crazy dislike for John Sheppard of SGA), but it drove me nuts especially with Fred because I wanted to like her and I just...was frustrated by her all the time. And that sucked, 'cause she was one of the few people who didn't really fall in love with Angel and that was awesome. So, Fred! I have conflicted feelings about her.

Hee, thanks! I'm so biased against her, mainly because of the breaking-up-my-OTP and everyone-worships-her things, so I wanted to hear what someone more sane than me thought.

Grey's Anatomy femslash, practically canonical or am I cruising for a bruising?

Practically canonical! But I think it does tread really interestingly near that line of what normal girl/girl interaction is and what would be slashy (I just also think it falls on the slashy side of the line)

Velvet Goldmine and/or Cobra Starship. Either.

Or both? How awesome would that be?

Velvet Goldmine...is one of those movies I love really passionately because of how ridiculously over the top it is. I own the illustrated screenplay and the soundtrack and way back when, we put together this two disc soundtrack set of...stuff. Songs from the movie, songs from the era, stuff like that. And I can't even say that I'm a huge fan of that era/style of music, but there's something about the story that Todd Haynes was telling and something about the way he told it and the way he pulled things together that's this really interesting story about fame and relationships and music and the business of music and promotion that all just really really worked for me. Plus there's glitter.

And OH COBRA STARSHIP. They are totally my second favorite after FOB, because they share that sort of...they share this mindset where they're like, okay, where did the fun music go? And they are shamelessly pop and shamelessly...shameless and utterly ridiculous and they're having fun and I love them all so much, I can't even say.

The first disc had the movie versions of the songs, quotes, the audio from the trailer, and stuff like that. it had "Dead Finks Don't Talk" which is seriously one of my favorites from what was played in the movie, JRM singing "Sebastian," the full cut of Ewan's "Gimme Danger" and...mostly it was the movie versions of the songs and quotes. The second disc had either studio cuts or alternate versions of songs by the original artists. Like, it had Bowie's "Velvet Goldmine," Iggy Pop doing "TV Eye" and "Gimme Danger," and stuff like that. Next time I see you, I will bring you a copy ('cause I didn't rip all of it when I imported into iTunes, but I have the cds).

Norrington.

Why is he so awesome?

From: [identity profile] mimesere.livejournal.com
Because he's made of awesomeness with a side of awesomesauce.

Norrington is superduper awesome because he's really competent at his job, *knows* he's really competent at his job, thinks crime (and Will Turner) are stupid, and because he has this incredibly dry sense of humor and doesn't suffer fools.

Oh, oh, also because he has the sweetest smile and was going to LEAP OFF A CLIFF after Elizabeth until someone pointed out that he'd die and then was like, OKAY! PLAN B! and because he gets all bratty when Jack is there to pull his pigtails and because he didn't think control of the ocean should be given into the hands of pirates and because even drunk and down on his luck he knew what Jack was saying was a load of bull and because he leapt over the railing to fight undead pirates without blinking and fought Koehler and did his duty even when he didn't want to.

um. and he's played by Jack Davenport :)

Ooo....

I would like to know your opinion on why, in any genderswap fic, if the genderswap is male to female and menstruation is discussed, the male-to-female character always has killer cramps and is in agony? I've been reading such fic relating to Supernatural, but I know it exists elsewhere as well, and I don't get it. I'm not always in agonizing pain, so why are they?

That's been bothering me.
Clearly I need more of a life than I have now.

It's one of the great mysteries of genderswap, along with Hair Magically Grows To Feminine Lengths! and Skirts Make All the Difference, Really! and stuff like that.

But, for a slightly less snarky answer, I think that it's because menstruation is one of those things that is exclusively female and which has no male equivalent, including the hormonal changes and the cramps and whatnot, so when it's made extreme like that -- agonizing cramps, crazy mood swings, etc -- it's kind of like the author saying, "OH YEAH, HAVE SOME MENSTRUATION, WIMPY BOY, THIS IS WHAT WOMEN DEAL WITH ALL THE TIME!" without actually dealing with the part where a lot of women...don't.

But honestly, I think that male to female genderswap is one of those things where femaleness gets exaggerated to a kind of comical degree. or something.

...sheer brilliance? I mean, that's like asking why is Citizen Kane considered to be the best US film or why Kurosawa is so awesome (neither of which compare even a little to Mammoth, of course).

Between brilliant and subtle directing techniques like monster-vision and the masterful acting of people like Vincent Ventresca, Summer Glau, Sean Patrick Flanery, Julie Benz, and Dean Cain and the complete realistic special effects, I really don't see how they would not be considered great art.

Sheeeeeeila.

When you call today, remind me that I have to actually leave the house while I'm on the phone with you, okay?

I have to get mail. And groceries. And if I am not on the phone with you, I will do it never.
